Dan Micek remains amazed that a project he created 33 years ago, as part of a master’s degree thesis, remains a popular game in schools around the Midwest.
The Darien resident was working as a school social worker when he came up with the idea for his Wheel of Wisdom game.
“I saw that it was very hard for special education students to integrate with the regular students in schools, and I created the game as a way to help with that,” Micek said.
“It started with a pizza pie wheel, and my brother, who’s an electrician, made a few buttons for the game.”
While he has watched the popular “Wheel of Fortune” game on TV, Micek said that program had nothing to do with helping him come up with the idea for his game.
Rather, the idea came from a family tradition.
“My whole family is into games,” he said. “Nobody was allowed to open Christmas presents until they answered questions for a game.”
Micek knew quickly what he liked about the game he created.
