Today, we bring you a quick tip with which you may or may not be familiar. On it’s own, this tip isn’t useful but this is a supporting guide for tutorials where you’re told to change a file extension without any explanation of how to show the extension (disabled by default in Vista and 7) in the first place.

This guide will show you how to show file extensions in Windows XP and Windows Vista/7.

Show File Extensions in Windows XP

To show file extensions in Windows XP:

    1.

    Go to My Computer (WINKEY+E.)

    2. Click Tools > Folder Options.

    3.

The easiest way I found was using a command window (start key +R) In here, navigate to the folder which contains the files you want to rename using the change.

Click the View tab, uncheck Hide extensions for known file types, and click OK.

Show File Extensions in Windows Vista/7

    1. Go to Computer (WINKEY+E.)

    2.

Press the ALT key to show the action toolbar. Click Tools > Folder Options.

    3. Click the View tab, uncheck Hide extensions for known file types, and click OK.
